The collection expanded from the focus on antique sculptures and artefacts to include masterpieces from the blossoming art scene of the renaissance, reason why the name is plural, as it includes several collections, one of which is the Pinacoteca, which houses masterpieces by renaissance masters such as Caravaggio, Rubens and Tiziano. The museum was founded in 1471 by Pope Sixtus IV (Francesco della Rovere) to house his growing collection of antique bronze statues, including the statue of Rome's founding history the Capitoine Wolf.
